Debate Liveblog

McCain is throwing Petraeus' name around as much as possible. I wish Obama would debunk this surge argument. It's ridiculous and misleading.

On to Afghanistan.

Should more U.S. troops be sent to Afghanistan?

Obama: yes as soon as possible. The situation is getting worse, not better. Even Republicans are agreeing with this. Commanders say we don't have the troops right now to deal with Afghanistan. Afghanistan is the central front where we have to deal with Al Qaeda. We have to deal with Pakistan too. Republicans agree. It's the only time their line has moved for Obama all night. Until we get rid of safe havens in Afghanistan, Americans won't be safe.

McCain: he's not prepared to cut off aid to Pakistan. He's against military strikes into Pakistan. Now you don't say that out loud. Um, we're basically in a shooting war with Pakistan right now, John. It's in the newspaper every day. He's making headway with Independents on this though, so it's working. It's not just the additional troops that matters, it's a strategy that will succeed.

Obama: I didn't say attack Pakistan. I said if Pakistan is unable or unwilling to act to take out Al Qaeda in Pakistan, we should act. He's right; McCain totally twisted what he's said. Ooooh, Obama just kicked him in the balls with a reference to singing about bombing Iran and talking about rendering North Korea extinct. Johnny's not smiling now. He's pee-ossed.
