A New Year, A New You
It's a new year. A clean slate. A chance to start over, to re-make your life the way you want it to be. Whether you consider the new year a real opportunity for change, or a superficial signpost that really means nothing, it cannot be denied that there's something clean and pure about a new year, even though, in reality, all we've done is change a number. Everything pauses. People take a deep breath before diving into the new, the next, what's coming. It's a chance to do a personal accounting, to reevaluate those aspects of ourselves and our lives that we'd like to be different.
2008 was not the best year for most people. Eight is one of my favorite numbers, but it didn't bring much luck, did it? For me, it was clear from the very first day of last year that 2008 was going to be a challenge. I wonder what the record is on how good or bad your year is going to be based on how the first day goes? January 1, 2008 wasn't pretty for me, but I can safely say that '08 ended on a very good note, with a great vacation and quality time with my family. And if my first, peaceful day of 2009 three days ago is any indication, 2009 is going to be great.
For even the biggest cynic, there's something hopeful and optimistic about New Year's Day, isn't there? Hand in hand with the passage of time, with the flipping of the calendar into a new year comes a sense of expectation that things are going to get better. I'm sure people had great hope for the future on December 31, 1928, 1938, and 1967, regardless of how the ensuing years turned out.
So here's to a better 2009. May we have peace in the Middle East, no more terrorist attacks anywhere in the world, an end to the recession, firmer, toner bodies, gainful and more profitable employment, better and more fulfilling sex, and spiritual enlightenment.
Personally, I'll settle for just one of the above.
